The Road to Wigan Pier A Yorkshireman in the South will always take care to let you know that he regards you as an inferior. If you ask him why, he will explain that it is only in the North that life is 'real' life, that the industrial work done in the North is the only 'real' work, that the North is inhabited by 'real' people, the South merely by rentiers and their parasites. The Northerner has 'grit, he is grim, 'dour, plucky, warmhearted and democratic; the Southerner is snobbish, effeminate and lazy - that at any rate is the theory.

A scruffy looking barge on a wide canal. It is moored under a new looking yellow elevator. There is a gravel quarry, so we assume this is used to load gravel onto the barge. The barge is lower in the water at its stern, so part loaded?
Pic as described in post. My bike is lying on the canal bank on the opposite side from the barge. The sky is a mix of clouds and blue.
I think the small locomotive is the Upnor Castle. It is pulling three wagons of different types, on a narrow gauge railway line. The line is in a wooded gorge. A man is watching the train. A small amount of blue sky is visible.

Shabby looking black 1970’s American car. It’s actually a 5.7litre 1969 Ford… I did look up more details when I photographed it (in my local Leeds M&S car park) but I’ve forgotten them….

A sunny autumn day. We are looking at the underside of a motorway viaduct. 4 concrete supporting pillars have colourful graffiti. There is a river to the side of a concrete / tarmac path and dense trees on the opposite river bank.
A wide gravel path has an anti motorbike barrier at its centre - or at least, I think the barriers are to stop motorcyclists, but they also inhibit anyone on a flat bar bike and potential completely stop eg wheelchairs, double buggies, some unconventional bikes from using at all. This one, however, has empty space, suitable for all to pass easily, on each side. Behind the path is a tree lined hill.

Hitler's democratic triumph exposed the true nature of democracy. Democracy has few values of its own: it is as good, or as bad, as the principles of the people who operate it. In the hands of liberal and tolerant people, it will produce a liberal and tolerant government; in the hands of cannibals, a government of cannibals. In Germany in 1933-4 it produced a Nazi government because the prevailing culture of Germany's voters did not give priority to the exclusion of gangsters.
