In general, when I talk to software folks about testing, I'm coming from such a different place that they immediately look at me like I'm an alien, so let's talk about how we tested at this hardware company I worked for, Centaur, which informs my biases about how I like to work. Some of the things that we did that were or are unorthodox in the software world are: Hired dedicated QA / test engineers, with testing being a first-class career path on par with being a developer No code review by default Virtually no hand-written tests Constant testing via what programmers sometimes called property based testing, randomized testing, fuzzing, etc., although we just called those tests (hand-written tests were called "hand tests"). Large regeression test suite (3 months wall clock to execute on compute farm) No unit tests Just to give you an idea of the general structure, when I left (in 2013), we had about 1000 machines generating and running tests at all times for roughly 20 logic designers and 20 test engineers. This was on prem and the machines took up half a floor of the building we were in. The general structure was that we had maybe 20% of machines running regression tests, and 80% generating and running new tests. Three months of regression tests is too much to gate commits on, so there was a much shorter list of tests that took maybe 10 minutes or so to run that people would run before committing. Those pre-commit tests would run on a special setup to run as quickly as possible, with overclocked machines that were the fastest machines money could buy, as well as a different simulator setup.

The same landing page I posted earlier for https://seams.so The tagline reads "Wisdom is made Together" on the left side, and on the right is a list of recent test annotations I've made all of them from squishy.computer except one. It reads as a technical webpage. In the bottom left corner are the icons for tangled and bluesky.

it's the same arcitecture diagram from yesterday, but now re-arranged slightly, and with some new additions: including starfall and semble.so which also write data to the pds. additionally, each area is highlighted by the protocol it speaks: local fs, automerge, atproto and open web are the 4 different areas of this "map".
an excalidraw screeshot of a diagram that shows how i can write things in neovim on my local machine, and have them go through a few services and end up on my pds. using pushwork to push from local to automerge, and then patchwork / groundmist to push from automerge to pds, i get a bit of a rube goldberg machine that allows me to edit things locally, and from my phone, publish to my pds and then to the wider web through a static site generator that reads from my pds (would need to build this). it shows links between various file storage and software, which projects read / write to where but it's very difficult to put into words. it seems rather complex and brittle, with lots of different formats and moving pieces and software projects, with files having to be converted along the way (though some could be mitigated by using markdown) to various formats like leaflet.pub and whtwnd.com to get broader adoption
