Following the horrific assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, along with the attempted assassination of Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, IATP wishes to express our deepest sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims. Speaker Hortman was a dedicated civil servant, a valued leader, and a champion for programs like the free school lunch initiative that served children and families across the state. She will be dearly missed.

Shaping the Future of Food: Corporate Climate Accountability

“There is no doubt that U.S. trade and farm policy needs to be fixed, but this kind of blanket tariff is not the way to do it. Farmers have made their upfront investments for the year as they head into planting season with enormous market uncertainty. Already low prices and higher costs are likely to be made worse by a tariff war. Tariffs alone are not an economic strategy, nor are they a plan to revitalize rural economies,” said Ben Lilliston, IATP’s Director of Climate and Rural Strategies.

“Once again, farmers are caught in the crossfire of Trump’s reckless use of tariffs. Predictably, there are already signs of retaliation, with China and Canada raising tariffs on U.S. farm goods. Other measures from Mexico will no doubt follow. The last time this happened, the Trump administration paid out a record $28 billion in compensation to farmers for lost income. While the payouts slowed the bleeding, the long-term harm to relations with key trading partners continues. We need to be working with our trading partners, not against them,” said Karen Hansen-Kuhn, IATP’s Director of Trade and International Strategies.

"This abrupt and sweeping action has driven global stock market prices down and thrown U.S. allies into turmoil. Despite the claims of the administration, there was no national security crisis. But these unilateral actions are rapidly creating one. Turmoil is never good for farmers. They will be caught in the crossfire of abrupt increases in import prices and retaliatory measures by trading partners. Prices for inputs from Canada, including potash fertilizer could increase, while commodity prices for U.S. farmers could well start to fall as trading partners put new restrictions on U.S. exports. Family farmers and consumers across the continent will pay for the resulting chaos and higher prices. We can expect to see some exemptions as stakeholders from all sectors seek to protect their interests. Already Mexico and Canada have been clear they will hit back hard on the tariffs. None of this commotion and hasty dealmaking bodes well for our food systems." -Karen Hansen-Kuhn, Director of Trade and International Strategies, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy
