NEWS DIGEST | Bonn Climate Talks Last week, UN climate talks in Bonn ended with major issues still unresolved ahead of COP31. Negotiators failed to reach agreement on key areas including adaptation finance, emissions-cutting work, and how climate science should guide decisions. Climate Home News described the talks as ending in ‘gridlock’. The divide is familiar but urgent: developing countries are calling for stronger finance to adapt to climate impacts, while wealthier countries continue to push emissions-cutting negotiations. One area did move to the center of the conversation: electrification. Turkey and Australia pushed for a target of 35% of final energy use to come from electricity by 2035. This was one aspect of practical direction in an otherwise stalled negotiation. The talks at Bonn show that action is no longer dependent on whether governments are willing to set climate goals, but whether they will deliver them. The latest IUCN Red List update shows biodiversity under growing pressure across land and the deep ocean. The update now lists 49,505 threatened species out of 175,909 assessed. It also highlights the human activities driving biodiversity loss, including mining, habitat destruction, infrastructure development, trade, and resource extraction. In the deep sea, 62% of mollusc species living around hydrothermal vents are now considered at risk, largely because of potential deep-sea mining. On land, the desert rain frog is now listed as vulnerable, with diamond mining, development, energy infrastructure, and the exotic pet trade threatening its limited habitat in southern Africa. The Red List is not only a record of species at risk. It also shows that conservation works. In Australia, the numbat, a native mammal that feeds mainly on termites, has moved from endangered to near threatened after decades of predator control and habitat protection. El Niño is a natural climate pattern driven by warming Pacific Ocean temperatures. But in a rapidly warming world, its impacts can become more severe. Scientists warn it could contribute to drought across Australia, Indonesia, and parts of Asia, while increasing flood risks in parts of North and South America. The 1877–78 El Niño contributed to devastating droughts and famines across multiple regions, with inequality and colonial systems worsening the crisis. Today, forecasting systems are far more advanced, but vulnerability remains deeply uneven.
Nearly 60 countries gathered in Santa Marta, Colombia, for climate talks focused on moving beyond fossil fuels. Unlike formal UN negotiations, the summit centred on implementation. Discussions focused on energy systems, financing, and debt, shifting attention from targets to how transitions actually happen. The meeting forms part of an emerging ‘coalition of the willing’, as countries seek to move faster outside stalled global processes. This is not a one-off moment. The process will continue with a second conference in Tuvalu in 2027, signalling a longer-term effort to coordinate a global transition away from fossil fuels. Amid geopolitical instability and energy price volatility, fossil fuel dependence is increasingly framed as a structural risk. At the same time, unequal access to finance continues to shape who can transition, and how quickly.

A ‘heat dome’ (high-pressure system) is trapping hot air over the region, allowing heat to build and persist. In a warming climate, these systems are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting, and more intense, amplifying extreme heat events.
In March 2026, an unusually early heat wave swept across the western United States, with temperatures rising up to 20–40°F (≈11–22°C) above seasonal norms and breaking records across multiple states. This is not only about extreme heat, but about timing. Systems built around predictable seasons, from water storage to wildfire management, are being destabilised as seasonal patterns shift. Spring is becoming less reliable as a transition period. Rapid snowmelt is already affecting water supply, while vegetation dries earlier, extending wildfire risk. Scientists warn that warming is making such events more likely and more disruptive by shifting the timing of entire climate systems.

SEEDS OF CIVILISATION | Staples That Shaped History Grains and plant-based foods have sustained humans for millennia — from wild grasses and legumes to wheat, rice, and maize. These staples fed communities, built empires, and shaped global systems. As agriculture scaled, staple crops became tools of trade, taxation, and industrial profit. Today, they dominate global calories, yet are often reframed as ‘new’, despite long histories in Black, Indigenous, and other communities of colour. Food Empowerment Project (@foodempowermentproject) actively challenges this erasure, questioning how cultural foods — particularly from BIPOC communities — are adopted, rebranded, and stripped of context. Through their vegan cultural food guides, they centre community-shared recipes that preserve cultural roots while supporting more compassionate food choices. While dung beetles provide myriad invisible ecological services for British farmers—saving the cattle industry an estimated £367m million per year—this species is in sharp decline. Spence, who founded the UK Dung Beetle Mapping Project (Dump), warns, “It’s pretty dark, to be absolutely honest with you. The dung beetle population is in a very serious situation.” Her six-year study, conducted with five other scientists for the IUCN report, found fewer than 50 percent of species are present today. “Diversity is just so low in the UK, which is a problem because different species thrive in different soils, altitudes, and habitats.” And without the dung beetles, and the continual breakdown of dung, we lose all their benefits.
