Portugal Braces for One of Its Most Severe Heatwaves on Record

IPMA has warned that an extreme heatwave will grip mainland Portugal for eight to ten days, with temperatures forecast to reach 43–44°C in places. Around twenty municipalities, mostly inland, face maximum wildfire risk.

Forecasters say an unusually strong and persistent anticyclone is settling over mainland Portugal, pushing temperatures as much as 12°C above seasonal norms in the first half of July. IPMA has confirmed the heatwave is all but certain through at least July 8, with some models suggesting it could persist until July 13 or 14, which would make it one of the longest and most intense heatwaves the country has recorded. Close to twenty municipalities across the Bragança, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, and Faro districts face maximum wildfire danger, with elevated risk across most interior districts. Tropical nights, where temperatures stay above roughly 20°C, are also expected, raising health risks for vulnerable people. Civil protection authorities are likely to issue heat-health alerts and reinforce firefighting resources as the heatwave intensifies over the coming days.
