#IGLYOSTATEMENT 📣❗ At IGLYO, we are dismayed to see the recent ruling from theUK Supreme Court, which ruled that trans women, holding a gender recognition certificate, do not fall under the legal category of women in their equality legislation. This means that trans women are no longer legally protected as women, exposing them to discrimination in the workplace, in educational institutions, and in public life in general. Not only is this result a crushing blow legally, with ramifications yet unknown, the media headlines surrounding this ruling have also once again stirred up widespread hostility and anti-trans rhetoric, continuing the ongoing moral panic around trans people in the UK. Much of the backlash against trans people in the UK is firmly aimed at young people. We saw the UK government’s recent decision to ban gender-affirming healthcare for minors, in a clear attack against trans young people and their autonomy. We also recognise that this ruling will greatly impact people of all genders, cis and trans, as it reinforces stereotypical and antiquated norms around gender, gender expression and appearance. We send our solidarity to the trans community in the UK.
