On the night of January 26, 1774, about twenty people from Marblehead, Massachusetts rowed out to a small island where stood a privately owned, for-profit inoculation hospital, and burned it to the ground. The few who were arrested after the fact were jailed in nearby Salem — a notorious British loyalist stronghold. Hundreds of people from Marblehead marched to the jail and broke them out. Salem's sheriff then raised a posse of five hundred men to invade the neighboring town and bring the arsonists to the law's version of justice. In turn, the people of Marblehead raised their own posse of one thousand to defend a different and deeper principle of justice. The sheriff, wisely, let the matter drop.
