I can’t get over how sad and terrible Kusimayu’s situation is. She’s a 14 year old girl, unlike the other survivors who are all adults. Everybody else in her small community, possibly the only people she’s known for her entire life, became part of the Pluribus. A lot of Pluribus is about pressure to conform and convert. Many times, people face these problems in their hometown, commonly small communities where everybody is very close, but then they leave and encounter people with different opinions and points of view. But when Kusimayu leaves her village to meet Carol and the others, we see all but one insist that they are okay with the situation and argue that it’s not that bad. These are adults that Kusimayu could’ve been looking to for some sort of guidance. Only one person tells her “you might think you want this, but you really don’t”.
