The role of humidity One of the most notable differences between 1976 and 2026 lies in the nature of the air itself. The recent heatwave was characterised by high humidity, making conditions feel more oppressive. Unlike in 1976, where the air was generally drier, the 2026 heat developed from air originating over the Atlantic. As it became trapped under high pressure, it was compressed and heated while retaining its moisture. This led to unusually high dew point and wet bulb temperatures, meaning that the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating was reduced. Abstract Denialist scientists played an outsized role in shaping public opinion and determining public health policy during the recent COVID pandemic. From early on, amplification of researchers who denied the threat of COVID shaped public opinion and undermined public health policy. The forces that amplify denialists include (1) Motivated amplifiers seeking to protect their own interests by supporting denialist scientists, (2) Conventional media outlets giving disproportionate time to denialist opinions, (3) Promoters of controversy seeking to gain traction in an ‘attention economy,’ and (4) Social media creating information silos in which denialists can become the dominant voice. Denialist amplification poses an existential threat to science relevant to public policy. Born in 1976, Shav attended Cathays High School, where she first became politically active. At the age of 15, she began organising social justice and anti-racism campaigns. She went on to study at Coleg Glan Hafren, the University of Glamorgan and the University of the West of England, developing a strong interest in equality, economic justice and workers’ rights. Before entering full-time trade union work, Shav held roles in the retail, customer service, hospitality and charity sectors. She later became a full-time officer for the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS). In 2013, she was appointed Welsh Secretary, representing thousands of civil service employees across Wales. In 2018, Shav became President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Cymru. In 2020, she was appointed Acting General Secretary, becoming the permanent post-holder in 2021. In doing so, she became the second woman and the first Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) person to hold the role. Shav has served as a primary school governor and chaired her local Constituency Labour Party. She has also served on the boards of the People’s Health Trust and the Bevan Foundation, and was a Commissioner for the Constitutional Future of Wales. She continues to support Show Racism the Red Card and is a member of the FAW Strategic Committee. In 2026, Shav was elected as the Member of the Senedd for her home constituency of Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf. She currently serves as Welsh Labour’s spokesperson for Employment, Equalities and Economic Transformation, and chairs the Welsh Labour Senedd Group.

Under his leadership Greater Manchester became the first city in England outside of London to bring bus services back under local control, overcoming opposition from transportation companies. Arcadia, admittedly, is about how death is always lurking, even on the best of days. All the same, to be at the beginning, again, knowing nothing, again, really does feel good sometimes.
It'll be hard for Burnham to remain the change guy if he makes it to Downing Street, and Farage, like the Emperor Palpatine, has an unnerving ability somehow to return. But there's a quote from Tom Stoppard's 1993 play Arcadia that seems appropriate today. "It makes me so happy," says one character, talking of quantum physics, not political uncertainty. "It's the best possible time of being alive, when almost everything you thought you knew is wrong."
The biggest assumption overturned by the by-elections, though, is the depressingly widespread belief that the only way to win was to keep ratcheting further and further towards the politics of rage. There are more than a few reasons to doubt Burnham can deliver on his message of hope and change. Nonetheless, he campaigned on neither "steady as she goes" nor "legitimate concerns": his message was that things can and should get better. And with that, he took Labour to overwhelming victory in a Leave-voting red wall area which as recently as last month opted overwhelmingly for Reform.
It seems unlikely the 7 per cent of Makerfield voters who just opted for Reform's yet more evil twin were unaware of what Farage was offering or the case he was making. The sense is of a man struggling to respond after being beaten at his own game, by an unabashed extremist who plays well on social media. Farage now faces the same dilemma he once posed to the Tories: stand firm and lose votes to his right; move right and alienate those closer to the centre. The rise of a party so extreme it requires me to refer to Reform's voters as "closer to the centre" is, of course, terrifying; but there is some comfort in the fact that watching Farage flail is at least extremely funny.
