As you’ve probably noticed, there is a belief among some Nevadans that Republican governor and self-styled Trump whisperer Joe Lombardo will save us — that the governor's staggering charm and mad skills of persuasion would combine with his purportedly Western lawman-style sense of uprightness and decency ("I'm Joe Lombardo") to prevent Trump from, say, deploying shock troops to forcibly seize control of ballots, polling places, tallying procedures, and the election (even though as a consequence of such a takeover Lombardo's reelection would be assured). Then again, the cornerstone of the "Lombardo will save us" proposition is that Lombardo's influence with Trump is protecting Nevadans — and presumably its all-important tourism industry — from despicable actions by Trump's immigration enforcement thugs. Too bad that Lombardo-Trump accord, if in fact there is one, was evidently unbeknownst to the blundering ICE thugs who made international headlines with an ugly botched attempt to arrest a 57-year-old man at Harry Reid airport, suggesting to people the world over in the process that flying into Las Vegas is a dangerous proposition. Lombardo didn't thwart the ICE thugs at the airport. People did. And people, specifically Nevada voters, are the ones who ultimately will have to defeat Trump's perpetual malevolent assaults on democracy in Nevada.

In 2024, in a national test, just 35 percent of high-school seniors were "proficient" at skills such as analyzing complex fictional themes and evaluating the effectiveness of an author's argument. About the same number scored below "basic," meaning that they may struggle to draw conclusions from concepts explicitly included in a text, or to use context clues to determine the meaning of an unknown wore. Adult-literacy scores have also dropped: Nearly 30 percent of American adults cannot paraphrase or make inferences from a multipage text. In 2017, that number was less than 20 percent.

Demand a Data Center Moratorium in Clark County! Clark County has a critical opportunity to establish clear rules for data centers rather than addressing massive environmental impacts one project at a time. Big tech companies are looking to expand heavily into our region, threatening our natural resources and community infrastructure. The Clark County Commission is meeting on Tuesday, July 7th to discuss the application process and approval criteria for data centers (Agenda Item 50). Join Las Vegas DSA in demanding a moratorium on new data center approvals until strong, community-first regulations are established!
