I want to publicly commend Councilman Dr. Sterling A. Wilder for demonstrating the courage to stand up for the citizens of Lynchburg and for calling attention to what I believe was the profound dysfunction and counterproductive conduct that characterized last night’s City Council meeting. As a community leader, I am deeply concerned that too many individuals who publicly identify as people of faith and faithful churchgoers appear more committed to advancing personal agendas than pursuing policies that genuinely serve the people of Lynchburg. Public office is a public trust—not a platform for personal grievances, political theater, or ideological vendettas. When elected officials or those seeking influence place their own interests above the interests of the community, they undermine public confidence and distract citizens from the issues that truly matter. Frankly, I am tired of it. It is also time for our city to stop putting party over people. The citizens of Lynchburg did not elect leaders to protect political parties, ideological factions, or personal alliances. They elected leaders to solve problems, strengthen our community, and improve the quality of life for every resident. The interests of the people must always take precedence over partisan politics. The people of Lynchburg deserve leadership marked by integrity, civility, transparency, and a sincere commitment to the common good. We should elect individuals who will listen to the voices of the people, address the real challenges facing our city, and govern with wisdom rather than division. City Council chambers should be a place where serious decisions are made for the betterment of our community—not a stage for unnecessary spectacle. The citizens of Lynchburg deserve leaders who understand the weight of public service and who are genuinely invested in the well-being, safety, and future of this city.
