Neither Dungeons Nor Dragons A game about avoiding responsibility by gary D Pryor Your company of heroes sit around the tavern table, food and drink, stories and songs. A messenger bursts in “A monster has carried away the royal heir!” The room falls silent, all eyes fall on you. Each of you is a hero, champion of the people, slayer of monsters, protector of the realm, BUT today you don’t feel like it… Each of you must state your case as to why today you cannot leave the tavern. Everything you say, no matter how ridiculous, is true and canonical. After you make an excuse the player to your left adds a detail undermining your excuse. “But I…” Bring in past knowledge, contradictory evidence, or logical fallacy, but no one may directly insult or accuse a comrade of lying. In rebuttal the excuse giver must invent a way that both statements are somehow in fact true. Afterwards ask the player to your left “well, why don’t you go?” No player may attack the credibility of another player, but instead must retcon the existing evidence to make their excuse invalid. You want one or more of your comrades to take care of this for you, but you still have to be polite. You can only imply your comrades are lying. You may only interrupt another player to point out that their story contradicted a previous story, at which point they must state “I was just getting to that” and make an excuse for the error. If a contradiction slips by, the chance to call them on it has passed. The most recent statement is cannon. If any player cannot invent a story to explain away a contradiction in their excuse they must leave the tavern to fulfill their civic duty and the game is over.
About 20 years ago I dropped acid at a friends house, and her boyfriend came and picked her up unexpectedly, and she just left me at her house with her dads record collection, and I thought "into the purple valley" sounded psychedelic so I put this on. I was transfixed by how much it clashed my mood and thoughts, and it held me captive for what felt like an eternity. Only much later did I discover that this record kind of kicks ass.

Rando Redditor: Though I'm curious, what about your dice can't be reduced to number comparisons? It might be a little less immediate than a symbol, but it should still be playable that way. Me: You can replicate the exact or similar math by using a conversion chart, it's just really slow that way. The genesys math is statistically crunchy. Every roll is opposed, and you are you rolling varying success & failure on 3.5 separate axis at once. This tool has helped me wrap my head around it. In my game you use it to generate a pass fail result, a + or - unrelated condition with degrees of success, the passage of time, and the occasional miracle or calamity. All with one roll. You could do this by rolling on a huge chart with lots of modifiers, rolling a lot more times consecutively, or assigning non-numerical values to the different die faces. There is probably a clever math solution I didn't see, but I didn't see it.
Me: Wanted to say that even as I have fell in out of MtG over the years, this blog has been a continued source of inspiration for me as a hobbyist game designer. My 1st fully featured TTRPG has lived through nearly a year of playtesting and rewrites. Something I didn't really see coming was that being very original would create such a steep learning curve. The game is simple, but there are so few hooks to grab onto for onboarding (like preestablished shorthand). Any sage advice? Mark Rosewater: Resonance is important as a learning tool, so look for things that players can recognize, even if they show up in a place that’s untraditional.
