A person, a man, began to poke his bespectacled head in, his thin beard framing a grim but hopeful smile. And I pulled myself around the edge of the curtain and threw myself at him, screeching. I did everything not to use my claws, including just slamming into his forehead with my keel bone. I didn't want to draw blood. But I did have to try to clamber over him to get out of the room and draw him away. So, I hooked his collar with wings and feet, and tried to simultaneously push and pull myself over his head as he batted at me and yelled in alarm. My tail may have lashed about indignantly, and I may have nicked him in the shoulder with my hind claws. They're pretty big talons and not at all retractable, and being careful while struggling with someone way bigger than you is hard. So, as this moment had approached and began to unfold, I felt like it was scripted. As if it was inevitable that it would happen, and all that I would have to do is remain calm, determined, alert, and make good choices, and I'd get through it. What I didn't reckon with was how the chaos of contact with a poor unsuspecting surgeon would throw me into a terrified and blinding panic. Things happened. In some order. "Ackpfth!" he shouted, just like out of a comic strip. I flapped madly and squawked like an indignant parrot, and felt my tail pass briefly through his open mouth. His clipboard hit me in the hip, and I felt his other hand slap my wing. And then the whole world began to tilt, and I saw the floor racing up to meet my face. It surged in two motions, with a short pause in the middle, as he landed on his butt and then began to fall backward. I must have used my wings to arrest my own fall, kicking to de-tangle myself from the poor, desperate guy. Because I ended up sliding across the floor with a bit more grace than how I'd attacked him in the first place, while he nonsensically yelled, "Where is my paycheck?!"
