A lot of plamo kits don't need priming specifically for paint to stick, but I like to use it to cover dark colours or basically make up for my own poor colour mixing (www.youtube.com/@pmpaint9060 JP channel but great resource for primer vs paint interaction)

Because undercoats effect the colour on top, you can basically shade first and then follow up with your overall colour. And because that will cover everything, even if you do sloppy shadows, it will start to blend and even out. If you go too far you can wind it back a lil with a melamine sponge
