Because undercoats effect the colour on top, you can basically shade first and then follow up with your overall colour. And because that will cover everything, even if you do sloppy shadows, it will start to blend and even out. If you go too far you can wind it back a lil with a melamine sponge

I use lacquers because I also want to paint gunpla and it's just... the standard, I guess, but I also recommend it because you can layer paint types to do less work or achieve cool effects. Lacquer can be covered by enamel and that can be covered by acrylic.
