The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall itself were designed by architect Viljo Revell as a symbol of public inclusivity in self governance. The barricades closing it off were a metaphor for how government has become increasingly insulated from the public. #TOpoli

In the pursuit of a “Beautiful city” we should strive for useable public spaces. Nothing says neglect like barricades public spaces. Might as well put up a sign: “Welcome to Toronto: you’re not welcome here.”
