She walks up and takes in the sights, eager for a closer look as she scans the room around her. A red carpet, adorned with multiple couches and tea tables, with two encircling staircases leading to a door above. Beyond the window, a gorgeous view of the vacuum of space, a sky full of stars bordering a jade-green starship she’s only ever seen in textbooks. The whir of an engine. The turbulence of the flight. The warm, homely smell of fresh coffee from behind the bar. Father never let her into space growing up. The Spina required him up there almost daily, but Father was always hesitant to risk his daughter’s future on a bad flight. And though Navia is thankful that her father was looking out for her, a part of her still wishes she’d gotten her space legs before boarding. The view is almost nauseating at first; the vertigo was difficult for Navia to adjust to, and getting her head to stop spinning was an ordeal all on its own. But she looks out the window anyway, eager to gaze upon the starship down below—and the blues and yellows of Focalors’ surface are nowhere to be found. Navia thinks of asking how far they are from home. She decides she’s better off not knowing.
