A peacock mantis shrimp peering out from its burrow in a coral reef, photographed head-on. ▎ A thorn bug (Umbonia crassicornis) perched on a human fingertip, viewed head-on. Its tall, sharply pointed pronotum rises like a green pyramid with vivid orange-red striping along the central ridge and edges. The textured surface is patterned with fine bumps. Two glossy red eyes are visible at the base, with orange-banded legs gripping the skin. The insect is roughly the width of the fingernail it's standing on.
A dumbo octopus photographed head-on in the deep sea by an ROV. Its rounded, pale pinkish-purple body has a lavender sheen, with one pointed ear-like fin visible to the right.
