"Freud began to write about the idea of NTR when faced with the Wolf Man’s propensities to undo progress in the therapy (Freud, 1918); the NTR was thus first addressed as a troublesome development in the course of the analysis, where, despite the increasing efforts of the analyst, the treatment situation worsened and eventually terminated. In [italics] The Ego and the Id [end italics] (Freud, 1923), Freud developed the idea that the cause of NTR was unconscious guilt, which expressed itself asnthe patient punishing himself and finding satisfaction through this punishment. Theninternal sado-masochistic conflict was played out between the attacking super-ego, which manifests itself as a sense of guilt, and the ego. Freud suggested this as a dynamic in suicidal relatedness (Briggs, 2006; Freud, 1923, p. 394).
The death drive is central to Freud’s (1923) discussion of NTR in [italics] The Ego and the Id. [end italics] For Freud, NTRs constitute: 'unmistakable indications of the presence of a power in mental life which we call the instinct of aggression or destruction according to its aims, and which we can trace back to the original death instinct of
living matter' (Freud, 1937, p. 243). Freud saw NTR as 'a force defending by every possible means against recovery and which is absolutely resolved to hold on to illness and suffering' (Freud, 1937, p. 242)."

He glanced back into the corridor to be sure it was empty, closed the door to my office, and sat down. "Er... it's like this..."
I sat there patiently until he finished his tale.
"So you ordered Hija not to shoot the escape pod?" I asked, just to be sure I understood.
"Right."
"And why not? Wait, is it because you wanted to avoid the data-work?"
I wasn't joking. Like all militaries, the Imperial Navy ran on data-work. Most officers spent more time filling out forms and filing re- ports than shooting at rebels. Per Imperial Naval Regulation 132. CAT.ch(22), shooting an escape pod (other than during an armed engagement with an intensity classified as above Category V) required the gunnery captain to file a Form XTM-51-CT to explain why the action was necessary. This was to avoid giving those squawking senators an excuse to claim that the Imperial Navy engaged in war crimes. Bolvan had always tried to get by with as little datawork as possible.
He shook his head no.
Well, this was interesting. "Are we trying to conserve lasers now?" He ignored my sarcasm, but his face turned red. "The sensors detected no life-forms aboard. I thought... um... we wouldn't have been scored with a kill... so.."
