But it did make things difficult that Day was human. His initial panic had settled into a kind of low-grade fear, ticking along with the same intensity as the rice he now stirred through slick, spicy oil. Not scorching, but toasting slowly and surely… A fear that, one by one, Day would uncover what made them un-human - and what? Leave? Was that what he was worried about?

It turned out to be a cool day. A 30 degree drop overnight which had not picked up even with the morning sun. Day threw on yoga pants, a stretched cami and a first-time-around college sweatshirt, and curled into herself on the chaise lounge. Even fluffy socks couldn’t shake the chill she was feeling. A cold kind of sweat.
