The officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have declared an Air Quality Action Day, in effect for Sunday and Monday, July 19 and 20. An Air Quality Action Day for PM 2.5 has been issued. Fine particulate levels are expected to be in the Unhealthy to unhealthy for sensitive groups range. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure. Here are some recommended actions that the public can take: *Due to observed and forecasted high concentrations of PM 2.5 values in the area, recommendations are for the public to avoid or limit outdoor exposure to wildfire smoke, reduce or avoid exertion or heavy work outdoors, and keep windows and doors closed as much as possible. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has declared an Air Quality Alert for Sunday and Monday, July 19 and 20, for elevated levels of fine particulate (PM2.5) in parts of southwest Michigan. Pollutants within those areas are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG, Orange AQI) range. The Air Quality Alert is in effect for the following counties in southwest Michigan... Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Branch and Hillsdale. Another smoke plume has settled over the region due to wildfires in Canada. It is expected that the increased pollution will continue into Monday; however, levels will improve during the day as winds shift to a southerly direction. With smoke lingering across the state, ozone also has the potential to increase quickly. It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory diseases like asthma. Monitor for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat, and eyes. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as: * outdoor burning, * use of residential wood burning devices. Tips for households: Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors and, if possible, run central air conditioning with MERV-13 or higher rated filters. The Air Quality Alert for today, Saturday July 18th - has been cancelled for the counties of Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Branch and Hillsdale. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has declared an Air Quality Alert for Sunday July 19, for elevated levels of fine particulate (PM2.5) in parts of southwest Michigan. Pollutants within those areas are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG, Orange AQI) range. The Air Quality Alert is in effect for the following counties in southwest Michigan... Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Branch and Hillsdale. Smoke has improved across the southern portion of Michigan this morning. However, another plume is forecasted to move from north to south across the state later today through Sunday. Concentration levels will be high enough to warrant a statewide alert. It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory diseases like asthma. Monitor for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat, and eyes. The officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have declared an Air Quality Action Day, in effect from Friday through Monday. Heavy smoke is lingering for the northern half of Indiana currently divided by a stationary front. The front will lift north later Friday providing a brief break in levels before a system late Saturday will bring another round of smoke. High pressure in place Sunday and Monday will recirculate the smoke over most of the state with the primary concern remaining the northern half of Indiana. This smoke, in addition to the other meteorological factors such as light winds and predicted flow from the north, will produce high PM2.5 readings. This will produce high PM2.5 readings into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) for West Central Indiana, which includes White County. Due to observed and forecasted high concentrations of PM2.5 readings in the area, recommendations are for the pubic to avoid or limit outdoor exposure to wildfire smoke, reduce or avoid exertion or heavy work outdoors and keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
