Years in Florida had given Wiles a fluency in political power that made her well suited for Trump. She had policy interests relevant primarily to issues in Florida, like conservation, and had done work on criminal justice matters. But she was far from a policy wonk. And her relative lack of White House experience risked putting her at a disadvantage for the likely battles ahead over the aggressive agenda spearheaded by ideologues like Stephen Miller and Russell Vought. They had learned during the first term how to operate the machinery of government. Miller, in particular, was almost certain to try to outmaneuver Wiles with his sprawling policy role. But there was another side to Wiles, too. Those who knew her well attested that underneath the grandmotherly vibes and reassuring manner was an operator who could so deftly wield a knife that her targets rarely saw it coming. Trump had nicknamed her "the Ice Maiden."
