Since this editorial appears to be responding to my column on this topic, I'm going to weigh in to point out that this comparison doesn't hold up. The report showed Boston low income kids ranked at 15% performance in math, middle class and affluent kids at 80%. That is not only a wider gap than Seattle's, but Seattle is outperforming Boston by 19 points among low income kids in math. How is that bad for Seattle? San Diego is at 35% for low income kids and 89% for not low income, compared to Seattle 34% and 93% -- so most of Seattle's (slightly) larger gap is due to our middle class and affluent kids doing better than they do in San Diego. This report shows Seattle has serious learning gap issues in its schools (as do most districts), but it's important not to overstate things. Here's a closer to home example: In the report, Bellevue's low income kids rank at the 27th percentile in math (7 points worse than Seattle), while it's non low income kids are at an extraordinary 99%. That's a 72-point learning gap, far wider than Seattle's. edopportunity.org/trends This editorial should maybe be about Bellevue?

I didn’t show up to the council meeting today because I was at work - and because I thought that hundreds of residents with complete consensus and evidence behind their position would be ENOUGH for you to understand the right decision. For you to vote for this outrageous breach of privacy that will inevitably be used by the federal government in their hunt for immigrants, and pretend you did so FOR MY BENEFIT is infuriating. You aren’t protecting me. You are completely ignoring the actual reality of a federal government that has no interest in laws - what safeguards!!??????? You don’t think there are SPD officers desperate for the chance to pass along every bit of data they have to their Nazi friends in ICE? You think people who choose Mike Solan as their representative, over and over again, give a shit about civil rights? Or are you pretending that ICE itself, or perhaps the Supreme Court, are the ones who would uphold the law!????? This vote was a disgrace and I no longer want you on the council. Every one of you who voted for it should resign. And when (not if!) ICE or any other Trump psychopaths use the data YOU just created for them to hunt Seattlites, I want you all to be papering the city with your apologies and spending every dollar that you and your families have or can borrow to make up for what you’ve done. I will hold you personally responsible for the harm that occurs from this vote. This vote was a vote for Trump and his fascist view of law enforcement. That attitude has no place in Seattle, and if you support it, neither do you.
