A letter to Senator Peters of Michigan, partly included below as space allows. As your constituent and someone who voted for you in your last election, I would like to express my strong desire that you vote NO on any continuing resolution or budget bill. The Trump administration and MAGA Republicans are intent on using every bit of government power to strip the rights of the American people. Every day the walk us further from the American ideal of democracy and unalienable rights and further toward a future led by strongmen, fascists, and tin pot dictators. Any budget or CR will do far more damage to our country, to Michigan, and to your constituents than a shutdown will. Agreeing to a compromise or 'bi-partisan' deal that gives Republicans everything they want while throwing in token benefits around the ACA or other issues would be a travesty. I would like to see you, Senator Slotkin, and congressional Democrat leaders in both houses throw everything at this budget. If Trump wants a budget or a CR, make it conditional on removing troops from cities, on firing anti-science lunatic RFK Jr from a position where he's directly causing the future deaths of who knows how many people and children, and on getting rid of the podcasters who have turned the FBI into a personal army. I was incredibly disappointed in your vote on the CR earlier this year. Agreeing to it prevented some measure of short term harm to those who depend on government funding at the expense of much greater long term harm to those same people and so many more. Just look at the damage the Trump admin has done this summer while not having to worry about the budget. I am a proud American who is absolutely ashamed of who we have become as a people. You have unique power to stand up to Trump, and you're in a unique position where Democrats in the Senate can prevent a CR from passing. Please, please use that power this time.

As a resident of your district, I'm writing today to tell you that I am profoundly disappointed in your support of a president who's first weeks back in office have included a string of blatantly unconstitutional actions. I am also disappointed that you seem perfectly comfortable that congress has completely abdicated it's duty to pass laws and expect they will be followed by the executive branch, specifically around budget and the establishment and continued running of government agencies. After your support of the 2020 coup attempt I am not surprised, but I remain shockingly disappointed. There was a time where conservative ideals meant something. That time is long past. While living in Grand Rapids I voted for Justin Amash several times, and he at least had the backbone to stand up for what he believed was right, which is more than I can say for you. You took an oath of office and purport to stand for and protect the constitution and ideals of this great nation - clearly that oath means little to you when a grasp at power on a strongman's coattails is available. [Location redacted] Your position as a China hawk is more important to you than jobs and stability for your constituents. That's certainly a choice, but it is your choice. What I don't understand then is why I don't hear you loudly objecting to China only receiving a 10% tariff vs the 25% being imposed on Canada and Mexico. Michigan is likely to be the most economically impacted state in the country by those tariffs; the numbers I see peg 25% of our state GDP as relying on trade with those two countries. Surely you don't view our neighbors to the North in the same light as China? Where's your voice on this? As I said before, given your history in congress I don't have high expectations, but it would certainly be a nice change if I could at least expect my congressman to act in alignment with your own stated ideals. Republicans like that have all been run out of office though, haven't they?
