When a leader uses this type of language, it says more about their insecurity than their strength. It signals that they experience disagreement as a threat. It’s pathetic. Underneath, there’s usually a fear of being wrong or exposed. It shows a limited view of leadership: they’re willing to rely on pressure alone to get things done. This mindset confuses loyalty to the leader with loyalty to a mission. “Get on the bus” is a terrible fit for how smart people work. The moment a leader frames disagreement as disloyalty, people start saying what they think the leader wants to hear. Complex problems require discussion and different viewpoints. In a “with me or against me” culture, people become hyper-focused on protecting themselves: optics, aligning politically, avoiding blame. Instead of asking, “What’s best for the company or the customer?” they’re asking, “Am I on the ‘right’ side of this?” If you want people to actually be excited, build a culture where disagreement is encouraged, the mission’s success is shared, and being “with” the team means being willing to think, question, and improve together.
