A Letterboxd Review of Tachigui: The Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters. Review as follows: What can I say? This is easily one of the most self-indulgent Mamoru Oshii films I've watched (so far). In the last year or so I've found myself very much going down the larger Oshii hole beyond Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor, having watched both Red Spectacles and StrayDog: Kerberos Panzer Cops. Which brings me to this one... Nominally Tachigui takes place in the same universe Spectacles, StrayDogs, and Jin-Roh The Wolf Brigade, the timeline where Nazi's win WW2 and Japan's post war history is altered (though maybe not as dramatically as you'd think), but it's very much not about the same things as the other Kerberos Saga entries. Which, to be fair, are undoubtedly art-house as hell in story and presentation themselves. This one is a mockumentary about a fictional anti-authority counterculture movement based around dining and dashing. The constant movie length narration going into exhaustive detail about the urban legends around its most notorious icons, who may or may not have ever existed. It's.... unique. I don't hate it. Reading the Liner Notes in the Extras on the blu-ray* after watching helped a lot in collecting my thoughts about the movie's context (especially pointing to the 1980s Urusei Yatsura episodes Oshii worked on that lead directly to this 2009 film's concept). Can I recommend it? Only if you are also going heavy and hard into the Mamoru Oshii hole. Wait, I didn't even mention its bizarre paper-cutout live-action/animation hybridized style... it works far better then I fully expected going in. But it kinda only works for this kind of off-the-wall concept. *which, of all the Oshii canon in English on blu-ray, how this ends up being one of a very few is so strange.
