As citizens, many of us are prepared, sleeves rolled up, to do our part--but leadership and accountability from you are crucial. Our Constitution calls us to uphold decency and justice, resisting the manufactured chaos that threatens to unravel the very fabric of our nation. Yet, the "shoulds" have passed. The time has come for action-loving, courageous action. The danger before us is undeniable. Project 2025 looms as a wrecking ball poised to dismantle the foundations of our democracy, paving the way for authoritarian control. The staggering number of bullet ballots, as flagged by Stephen Spoonamore, raises serious concerns about electoral integrity, particularly in swing states. A recount of these votes is imperative-not just as a procedural safeguard but as a testament to the transparency and trustworthiness of our democratic process. History teaches us that tyranny thrives on complacency. As Timothy Snyder warns in On Tyranny, "You submit to tyranny when you renounce the difference between what you want to hear and what is actually the case." Now is the moment to act. Uphold the values enshrined in our Constitution. Ensure a transparent recount in critical states. Lead with integrity and courage, inspiring citizens to do the same. The future of our democracy depends on it.
Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.
