They sampled 20,000 total stories from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini, and the Allen Institute for AI's chatbot using five prompts, and found that the same 11 words—names like Elias, Mara, and Elara, and occupations like lighthouse keeper, clockmaker, and librarian—appear in more than 88% of generated stories, with little difference between models.

There are a bunch of object interaction options associated with the HVAC unit, all of which are unreadable, garbled text. Me: I'd like to revisit our conversation last month about hiring a new CEO for our startup. We had a candidate who was very tall and had great hair, but some of the board was hesitating because he was a giraffe. You urged us to go ahead with the hire, pointing out the broad popularity of giraffes among people of all ages. Now, a month into his tenure as CEO, the giraffe has failed to make a single executive decision, and instead spends his time in the campus courtyard stripping the trees of leaves. The board is extremely disappointed, and asked me to request an explanation and a formal apology. ChatGPT said: Thank you for the update, though I’m genuinely sorry to hear how things have unfolded. In retrospect, my recommendation to proceed with the hire was based too heavily on superficial traits—charisma, universal appeal, and a commanding physical presence—and not enough on executive competency, decision-making aptitude, or opposable thumbs. While the candidate’s towering stature and enviable hair made a strong initial impression, I failed to adequately account for his species-specific limitations, particularly his lack of business acumen, human language fluency, and capacity for boardroom strategy beyond “find tree, eat leaves.”

A green laser makes a dot on the wall, then moves left and passes into a crystal of satin spar. When the laser goes through the crystal it makes a concentric ring pattern of 1-3 rings, depending on the angle at which it’s hitting the crystal. Each ring corresponds to the crystal deviating the laser in all directions but only at a specific angle. This is because each fiber has two refractive indexes, and which one the laser sees depends on the fiber’s orientation. The laser light passes through lots of these randomly oriented fibers. At each fiber boundary the laser either goes straight through (it saw the same index as the fiber it just left) or undoes its most recent direction change. When the laser exits the crystal it has either experienced 1 or zero net direction changes, and so there’s only a couple of angles it will exit the crystal at. Each exit angle gives you a ring of light on the wall. In the movie I keep changing the input angle, which changes what the exit angles can be.
