Regarding United States Action in Venezuela

In recent days, the Trump administration has demonstrated again its disregard for international law, violating the UN Charter's prohibition on the use of force by attacking Venezuela and abducting Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.

In the process, the administration has also violated United States law, which at a minimum requires consultation with members of Congress before involving US armed forces in attacks like the one the world has just witnessed.

Nicolas Maduro unlawfully claimed power after his country's most recent election. He has exacted untold brutality and suffering on the people of Venezuela. Bur this does not justify the Trump administration's unlawful actions.

The Society will continue to educate Americans-including members of the administration and of Congress-as to the responsibility of the United States to act consistently with, and prevent further violations of, international law.

The aspiration of the Venezuelan people for a return of democracy is commendable and must be respected. But democracy in Venezuela should not be, and is unlikely to be, advanced through the abdication of respect for international law.

As someone who has been suffering with Long-Covid, I understand just how debilitating it can be. Since my appointment in July I have held a number of meetings to look much more closely at Long-Covid and myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome and how we can best support people with these conditions.
As of 1 April 2024 there are over 90 adult post-Covid services across England, along with an additional ten children's and young people's hubs. These services assess people with Long-Covid and direct them to care pathways that provide appropriate support and treatment. GPs will assess patients who have had Covid-19 symptoms lasting longer than four weeks and refer them to a Long-Covid service where appropriate.
I also appreciate Ms. McConway's concerns about airborne transmission of Covid-19.

"It is difficult to put into words just how tough it is for our frontline staff at the moment. We are really worried about the toll that flu and other viruses are taking on our patients and on services across the NHS.".

This is crucial, not least as our NHS faces serious winter pressure. As some wards report facing “pandemic-level” strain, we need to be funding our health service properly – but we also need to take prevention seriously.

From improving air quality in public indoor spaces, such as schools, hospitals, public transport and workplaces, to restoring free lateral flow testing, there are so many ways to prevent viruses from spreading in the way that we take for granted that they will.

And while the pandemic feels like it’s over for many, there are an estimated 2 million people across the UK suffering the effects of long Covid – who have been left behind by governments eager to declare the crisis over. There is much more that could be done to support research into therapeutics for long Covid – in the first instance, for example, setting up a research task force to improve understanding and treatments of after-effects, ME and chronic fatigue syndromes.

Along with these practical measures could come, I hope, a collective change in attitude. One where we all acknowledge that our squishy and imperfect bodies sometimes malfunction, we design our workplaces and HR policies with this in mind – and we remind ourselves that the sign of a civilised society is one in which we look after each other.
