She tapped her heeled foot to the sound of the copier as it rhythmically scanned each sheet of paper. "Ms. Parker!" She swiveled at the sound of her name. At the front counter stood a balding man with a messenger bag slung across his shoulder. "Uh...hi, Professor De Vries — how may I help you?" The professor laughed. "Ah, Micah, why are you so formal? You act like I haven't known you for over ten years." Micah shook her head. "Jeez, Finn...you called me Ms. Parker."

He led her by the hand to an open door just down the short hallway. Once entering the space, he turned on the domed ceiling light and a stand lamp in the corner. The room housed a polished wooden chest of drawers, two matching shoulder-high bookshelves full of tomes, and a California queen bed covered with a black comforter and color-coordinated pillows. Micah took note of the extreme brightness of the space. "Are you sure you want the lights on?" she asked. "Of course," he insisted in a low pitch. "I want to see all of you."

It was a quarter after six, and the men's Bible study he would attend was scheduled to begin in fifteen minutes. As he exited his white Toyota with his worn leather Bible, he stood face-to-face with Nathan, the study group leader. As one of the few members who stood taller and took up more space than Steve, Nathan was a commanding and, at times, intimidating presence. This was one of those times. "Uh..hey, Nathan," Steve shakily greeted him. "What's up?" "Hey, buddy." The giant man placed a proportionate hand on Steve's shoulder. "I'm glad you came early. I wanna talk to you for a second. Nothing bad, just wanna talk."

"Oh, Steve, you came alone. Where is your wife?" Steve took a deep breath. "Micah's out of town, but she'll be back." "Hmm. I noticed her absence at women's group this past Tuesday. She never told us about a trip away. Where'd she go?" Internally, he panicked, not expecting to be asked where his voluntarily missing wife had gone. He chose the first thought that entered his head - the resort and party island at the other end of the state. "Uh…Put-in-Bay….." The woman's curiosity was piqued. "Really?"

Once at the bed, they kicked off their shoes. He pulled her dress over her head and took off his shirt and undershirt, exposing his developed pectorals and solid midsection, and dropped his dark jeans. He then unfastened her silken black bra, exposing her ample bosom. Finn firmly caressed Micah's excited areolae as he complimented her. "Ah, so sexy." As he gently pinched her nipples, a sensual tingling traveled down south. She breathed, "Mmm, that feels nice." Her hands journeyed to the outside of his blue boxers, which sported a protrusion. She asked gently, "Can I... touch it?" "Yes, of course." She reached inside and rhythmically rubbed his solid, fleshy rod. "Oh, yes," he breathed. "Just like that." As they continued exploring each other in bed, her thoughts raced. This can't be real. I have no clue what I'm doing. I should tell him before we continue. "Finn?" "Yes, Micah?" She confessed, "If we're gonna go all the way, I should tell you.it'll be my first time." "Really? Your first time having sex?" he asked, taken aback. "Yep." He looked at her softly. "Do you want to do it?"

Excerpt from my litfic / women’s fiction WIP: Once the sun went down, the two sat back as the fireworks show began. Each burst of light illuminated the expansive lake into a mélange of reds, whites, and electric blues. Before Micah could hold herself back, she and Julian leaned in, their lips meeting each other, under the sparkle, the shimmer, the pomp, and the circumstance.

"Many of the businesses here are, uh.. niche. Residents of this community might enjoy them, but these are limited in their appeal and may not reflect the values of potential tourists who might otherwise want to visit." "You may feel that way about Marristone, but with all due respect, that's not my problem. I'm well aware of the auto industry and how it's affected our state. But right now, here in Marristone, our businesses are thriving. The township's commercial occupancy has hovered at around ninety-five percent for at least the past decade. That's pretty damn good."

Snippet from my women’s fiction / litfic WIP: Once Julian left the room, Micah took out her phone and paired it with the radio, setting it to her favorite playlist. She poured the dark paint onto the metal tray, and dipped an unused brush, carefully removing the excess. With each firm stroke of the horsehair, she glistened the antique whitened walls anew. Against the backdrop of the grand, majestic lake, "Voyage to Atlantis" by the Isley Brothers flowed from the robust audio system. Losing herself in the groove, the surface gradually transformed with the labor of her hands. "I could watch you all day," Micah heard through the waves of her own soundtrack.

Snippet from my women’s fiction / litfic WIP: At the helm, he bore down into the waves and steered as much as he could in a southerly direction as the wind blew in from the west. The waves crashed uncontrollably into the boat like a washing machine. The deck splashed with water as she held onto the cool, slick railing, coils of her hair sticking to her face. A particularly high wave rose to meet Micah's gaze. She slid towards Julian's chair, holding on for dear life as it descended onto them. This must be it. Didn't expect to go out in a storm on Lake Superior, but it is what it is.

As she parked, she caught a glimpse of him standing near the entrance, in a light grey polo shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals. Once she stepped out of her car, she gave herself a quick once-over — a floral off-white blouse, skinny jeans, and burgundy flats for a pop of color. She grabbed her tan satchel and walked toward her date.

"I mean, what d'you think about dinner?" "It's not bad..." she trailed off as she attempted to pick up another portion of her meal with scraping tines.

So, I just waited until my dad was really toasted on Guinness and bourbon, fucked up, nice nice, and I gave him the permission slip, just said it was for a school field trip or something, and he signed it. Didn't bother to read shit."

Snippet from my exvangelical / women’s fiction WIP: "Micah, you better not renege!" Zaire cautioned in jest. "Girl, this ain't Detroit!" Micah shot back, highlighting her sister-in-law's hometown. "Nah, 'cause in Detroit, we know how to play spades!" As the game went on, it was Steve's turn. He surveyed the cards on the table: Derrick's king of hearts, Zaire's ten of the same suit, and Micah's low three of hearts. As he carefully reviewed his hand, Micah encouraged him, "You've got this, Bear. Remember what I taught you." "Sis, he's new to this. Don't pressure him too hard," Derrick advised. "Let the man think." "Don't worry about him, D. Worry about your team."

Snippet from my WIP: Steve's eyes focused on the mountain of a man. "I grew up in the South, and we went hunting for squirrel. I was a good shot — we didn't have ammo to waste back in those days. And I improved on that skill in the US Marine Corps. I taught my son how to shoot, too, and he's damn good. And as Micah's probably told you, she and her brother are close. Now, I believe in the Second Amendment. So does he." Herman swallowed a spoonful of chicken noodle soup. "Just so you know." "I understand."
"Moppie, a separation helps. You can decide what you want without all the noise, and what you don't want. And with being without your partner, it's like a trial divorce. Are you better off with him, or without him?" Micah sighed. "Do I really wanna know?" Finn laughed softly. "I get it, but it's about what you need to know, and if you have the courage to do what you need to do to make your life better, no matter how difficult it might be. Life is too short to be so miserable."

Finn spoiled me, she thought as she rinsed off her zaftig body. I love Steve, but I wish be cared about my experience like Finn did.

Snippet from my latest release, To Die Is Gain. Luke sat in a navy chair against the wall of a light-blue painted waiting room. His head rested on the wall, and his eyes were closed. Did I wash the dishes? Did I wash the dishes? Did I wash the dishes? I wish these thoughts would go away. I'm behind on my labs. I need to stop oversleeping when I have class in the morning. Dr. Simmons is gonna fail me, I'm sure of it. I wish Rachel would clean up behind herself. Did I wash the dishes? Did I wash the dishes? Did I wash the dishes? I could use a drink. But when I drink, I sleep late. "Luke?"
Snippet from my WIP: Once dinner was ready, Savannah and Abby set the table, and the latter called the children to gather for the meal. Noah got up from the baseball game to sit with his family and their guest while two young girls — a blonde and a redhead — scurried down the staircase and joined the others. The spread was fit for a king: Salmon soup, Micah's Johnny Marzetti, roasted potatoes, and yeast rolls. Waiting in the wings for dessert, berry crumble and apple pie sat on deck, along with local Loos ice cream in the freezer. After everyone was served, Abby called out, "It's time to say 'grace."'

"Oh, damn. You're from Columbus, right." "Yeah." "How'd you end up in Losanti?" "My husband's from there."

Micah turned off the burner and plated the food. "I can't just cook a nice dinner for my husband?"

"So, a skill we want to work on as a group is our physic-ality. It's not just about memorizing our lines. It's about how we say them, it's about our body language, and it's about utilizing the physicality called for by the scene. This scene is a good example. So, let's start with the Second Act, Scene I, and the line from Gwendolen, 'Personally, I cannot understand...'"

Snippet from my women’s fiction WIP: He turned to look at her. "I'm glad I got a chance to meet you, Micah. When I called you 'beautiful,' I meant it." "Thanks, Julian...but is that what you tell all the new girls in town?" He looked down bashfully and smirked. "Nah. It's true. You're really pretty. And, I can tell you're really into learning new things. I saw how focused you were at my dad's bookstore. The books weren't just decoration to you. It was like you were actually interested in what's in there. That's different, and I like that."

Locating his brass ring, he pulled it out, searched for the brass Schlage key, and upon locating it, slid it into the lock. He turned the key and opened the door, the heavy silence hitting him right where it hurt.

Excerpt from my deconstruction fic/women’s fiction WIP: The tick...tick...tick of the old analog clock on the wall grated on Micah's nerves as she sat in the stale church hallway on a rainy Wednesday morning. She had taken a half-day off from work, so she could use up a half hour of time from the busy schedule of the pastor's wife. I already know this is a mistake.
