She’d never thought of it before, that some children passed their early years in story worlds, playing at make believe adventures, and believing in fairies. They could do this because someone else gave them food and clothes, a home where they felt safe. Miss Barry was solidly middle class, so it seemed unlikely she’d wanted for any of those things, unless perhaps someone in her home had made her feel unsafe. Something inside of her had been broken because of it.
