The adult bird is a beautifully patterned brown and buff with a dotted pattern on the head, a striped pattern on the chest and scallops on the back and sides. The chicks are mostly light brown little furballs.

The front of the bird is mostly white and the back is mostly black, but the lower face and throat are white and the crown and upper face are black except for a very distinctive white eyebrow. The bird has a long straight black bill and long pink legs.
A rushing mountain stream with trees on one side, a road on the other (with a bright yellow bus on it), mountain peaks in the distance and a cloudy sky. The water is surging over the rocks, creating dark rapids with peaks of aqua blue water and foam.
I'm honestly not sure what these gulls are up to. One appears to be just landing on the roof ridge and has wings out. The other is on the ridge, looking almost straight up with mouth slightly ajar. Anyway, they are mostly white with gray wings and black wingtips with white markings. The roof looks like weathered wood. The gable is a deep red. And the background is blurred greenery.

A small thrush is standing very tall on a gravel path, facing the camera. The bird's beautifully speckled chest is on full display, brown splotches on a buff background. The bird's head and face are mostly brown, but it looks like it has a buff-colored headband on, just over the eyes. On one side (in the sunshine), a tiny bit of red shading can be seen on the bird's side.
A rainbow painted street stretches out in the distance with a large church spire in the distance. The street has many businesses and restaurants and is bustling with activity.
A Blue-footed Booby stands on a large porous rock. It is leaning over so that the tip of its bill almost touches the blue leg. The face, neck, back and wings are mostly a chocolate brown with some lighter specks. The front of the bird is mostly white. And, of course, the legs and feet are a medium blue. The background of the photo is blurred rough, rocky terrain.
At the top of the photo is a very gray, cloudy sky with a wide "v" where two rock faces meet. In the middle lies Briksdalsbreen Glacier bridging the gap. Below that and much closer to the camera is a glacial stream winding through tree covered rocky bits of land. There are rocks in the stream, giving the water froth and movement.
An Atlantic Puffin with a rocky cliff as a backdrop is coming in for a landing. The wings are fully outstretched. The orange feet are spread wide. And the head is angled down somewhat with the orange nose tip leading the way!

A grebe floats along canal water creating a bit of a wake. The bird has a long mostly white throat and a body with mottled black and brown on top and white below. The bird has a black crest that turns into a v-shape as it continues toward a dark bill. The remainder of the face is white except for black streaks that start below the red eyes and continue to the bill. There is a hint of cinnamon coloring at the edge of white on the face and a ruff of brownish black feathers at the neck and chin that resemble mutton chops. The resulting look is quite dramatic.
A Black Guillemot leaps out of the water and attempts to walk across the surface with wings raised high. It is shown in profile. The bird is a dark chocolate brown with a black bill and black eye. The underside of the front wing is mostly white with black edging and the wing in back shows a large white patch on the outside of a mostly brown wing. The legs and feet are a bright red with black claws. Behind the bird, the water is splashing with water droplets suspended in air.
10 Puffins are lined up along a large boulder that angles downward somewhat (with another Puffin standing below the rock). The background is a grassy hill with a few yellow wildflowers.
A European Goldfinch is perched atop a plant that appears to be some type of thistle. The body of this bird is mostly neutral browns and buffs, but the wings are black with a large yellow wing patch. And the head is very distinctive with a bright red face, white collar and black at the neck and crown. The backdrop of the photo is faded blue sky.
Two gulls rest on the upraised gray shingled ridge of a building on which the upper portion of a painted red gable shows. The head and body of each gull is white with gray wings and a tail that has some black with white spots. The beaks are yellow, eyes are reddish-brown and the legs and feet are a very pale color. The background of the photo is blurred and shows the varying green colors of the steep hillside next to the fjord.
A very fuzzy young goose is floating along the water amidst the lily pads. The bird is beyond the chick phase, but is still on the small side and hasn't started developing adult plumage yet. It is almost uniformly light gray, including the beak which will later become a light orange. There is a patch of darker gray feathers on the back.
Skalanes is home to an Artic Tern breeding ground. It is not an exaggeration when I say that I saw hundreds of both adults and their young. As they breed on the ground, the young terns take over the road which is mostly only used by powerful all-terrain buses that are capable of making the three water crossings needed to get to the reserve (a hair-raising experience unto itself). This chick is under three weeks old as it has not yet learned to fly and is reliant on its parents to bring food. It is mostly the male parent that provides the food while the female parent stays behind to protect the young from predators. The chick in this photo has a downy grayish-brown head and neck with a black streak across the eye and a white lower cheek. The body is kind of a shingle-patterned gray, buff and brown which blends in well with the dirt and gravel road it stands on. The beak, which is black on top and pink on bottom is open as it calls to papa to bring home the bacon, er, make that fish. The leg and foot that show in the photo are pink.
Two small but powerful horses stand on hilly rocky ground in the shade of a large tree with a lake showing in the distance, just over the rise. The horse in front is bay-colored with a long mane and long tail. The horse behind it is dun in color with a trimmed mane that stands up. A dark stripe in the middle of the mane can barely be seen. Unseen is the dark end of the tail.

The fence is really cool looking, with the tops of the boards uneven and cut at a diagonal. The bird's beak, short legs and feet are all bright red, indicating that the bird is in breeding mode. The tail is quite long and shows a touch of black at the end. The background is blurred greenery.
A Common Eider mother sits alertly on the edge of a pond with four chicks, sprawled out at her side in various stages of napping. The mother is brown and tan overall with a feather pattern that includes some warmer hues as well. The chicks are light brown fur balls.
A Gray Heron is standing in a field of moss punctuated by large smooth boulders and is spreading its wings wide. The wings are gray on the upper parts and a slate gray on the lower parts and tips. The body is a light gray-blue and the neck and head are white with dark slate gray stripes extending from the back of the eyes to form an elongated V on the back of the neck. The birds smooth feathers contrast with the coarseness of the moss.

A Scarlet Tanager sits quietly on a small limb with leaves in dappled light in the background. The bird looks more orange than red in the lighting, but is nevertheless quite bright and dramatic-looking with the juxtaposition of orange feathers with jet black wings and tail.
A Buff-bellied Hummingbird dips its red beak into the artificial flower of a hummingbird feeder. The bird is hovering with wings up and back. The head and neck of the bird are an iridescent green and the belly and underside of the wings are a dark buff color.
A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak is perched among the leaves of a mulberry tree with a dark ripe mulberry in its beak. A couple of red non-ripe berries are nearby. The bird has a black head and throat, black body and tail with white patches, white chest and belly with black speckles and a prominent rose-colored patch on the breast. A Dunlin in its breeding plumage is standing on a bed of dried seaweed on one leg with eyes closed, taking a little siesta. The bird has a light brown patterned head, rusty and dark brown/black patterned back and wings, and a mostly white face neck and undersides except for a large prominent black patch on the belly. The bird's bill is longish and droops slightly.

The setting is deep woods, meaning that the lighting is very uneven as it filters through the leaves. The background of the photo highlights a lot of blurred circles and streaks of that filtered light.

A small chicken-like bird is standing in shallow water amongst reeds and other such vegetation. The Sora is brown to dark brown with white feather edges above and mostly gray below. This bird is likely a female because, although it has the characteristic black mask and throat, it isn't as large and distinct as that of the male. The most prominent feature of the Sora is the bright yellow beak.

A super cute little plover walks across the mud. It is brown above and white below with a black collar at the throat and a black band on the forehead and another from the bill to behind the eye. The legs are yellow and the bill is yellow at the base and black at the tip (an indication that the bird is in breeding mode).
A grackle is perched on a large bare branch or small trunk with its back to the camera but its head is turned to the left in profile. The all-black bird has its tail flared out so that it somewhat resembles a heart shape. The background is a tangle of stems, reeds and leaves.
A family of four Barn Owls is lined up in a an open eave inside an outdoor pavilion. The two on the left are almost fully grown, but still appear to have some of the fuzzy feathers of the young owls. The two on the right are probably the adults (although the owl on the far right is in shadow and sitting so that only the eyes and up are visible so I'm not sure). The owl on the left has its mouth wide open and looks as though it's yelling. The other three have eyes closed.
A group of 6 immature white ibises are milling around on a gravel trail. They have not gotten the almost pure white coloring of the adult bird yet, but are a mixture of brown and white. They do, however, have the long pink bill that curves downward, the pink legs and the blue eyes of the adults.
Three Dunlins fly low above the beach with brown bay water in the background. One bird flies in front and two others are inches behind and closely side by side. The birds wings are spread and feet are hanging. They are all in patterned shades of brown, dark brown and white.
A Northern Parula is taking off backwards from the small bare twig upon which it was resting. The wings are spread out in back and to the side and its head is turned to the right. The immature bird appears mostly gray with a yellow throat and upper chest. The background is blurred leafy trees.

The bird has a dark gray crown, bold white eyebrow, a dark line at the dark eye and a small patch of white below the eye, combining to give the bird a dramatic look. The wing looks to be light gray in shadow, but is actually an olive gray. The throat, chest and belly are a pale yellow.
