The push for "efficiency" often serves as a convenient pretext for consolidation of power, particularly when it's led by someone who benefits directly from state contracts while simultaneously advocating for small-government libertarianism. The cognitive dissonance there is staggering. When you juxtapose this urgent drive for bureaucratic efficiency with how existential crises—climate change, mass displacement, economic precarity—are handled, the disparity is glaring. Refugees are left stranded in bureaucratic limbo. Climate policy is slow-walked, obstructed, or outright ignored. Social safety nets are dismantled under the guise of fiscal responsibility. Yet, when it comes to AI-driven automation in government, there's an almost frantic urgency to implement it, even at the risk of oversight failures. Why? Because it serves the interests of those already in power. This isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about control. The speed at which these AI systems are being embedded into governance, with minimal public discourse or accountability, aligns disturbingly well with a dystopian trajectory. If efficiency were truly the goal, we’d see the same urgency applied to humanitarian responses, environmental protections, and equitable governance. Instead, we see a pattern: where efficiency benefits capital and power, it’s pursued relentlessly. Where it would benefit the vulnerable, it’s somehow always "complicated." So no, I wouldn’t tell you again with sincerity that this isn't shocking. It is. It’s dystopian, and it’s accelerating.
