JCog @jcog.dev · 6d so interesting thing: while it feels like a majority of software devs are pretty pro-AI these days, at least in some capacity (certainly not all though), r/ProgrammerHumor seems to be pretty consistently making fun of it, and tbh I'm not really sure what to make of that.

My understanding of it was that it's moreso the higher up management people that want AI implementation, while more ground level day-to-day programmers strongly dislike it. I'm not a programmer though so I don't know the actual dynamic.
I went through the top 25 posts in the last month and only found one that I would maybe vaguely describe as possibly pro-AI, and multiple that were either neutral or clearly against using it.
I'm personally not a huge fan myself (mostly working on firmware development), I've seen it misused and abused enough to the point where I outright distrust it's usage in most capacities. There's also the ethical issues in how the models were trained that I take issue with as well.
It's possible the r/programmerhumor demo skews in a way that the industry at large doesn't. Whether that's age or what Sarah mentioned or a secret third option, who knows. I wouldn't expect it but could be. Maybe a codeswitch thing like when someone speaks differently around different friends, too.
I just had this discussion with my boss where its like if you use ai at the very bloody least know what in the world the code does....
I feel like people who identify as software engineers or programmers have been more anti-AI than just… people who code or program generally Like I’m a systems engineer, I’ve never called myself a programmer, but I coding is one of those things most techies gotta do at some point
Most programmers I have spoken to both personally and professionally are either actively anti AI or highly skeptical, but it is both a small pool and they don't work in tech. I wonder what the percentages would be if you split by business sector and or location, esp silicon valley
