“I just wanted to state for the record that I fully uphold and respect the right to freedom of speech. I think this principle is really fundamental to our democracy and the work we do. However, I will call out when public commenters question my blackness. It’s a form of racism and white supremacy. My other colleagues do not have to experience this type of racism and white supremacy. I’m getting a little emotional and I apologize. The amount of racism we have to take as black councilmembers is quite despicable in this progressive city. I have a voicemail in my office with people calling me the N word constantly. We have people questioning my blackness here as public commenters. It’s disappointing. It’s very disappointing. They don’t even know where 10 black churches are. Couldn’t even name 10 black people. Don’t know the average household income of a black family is $50,000 in this city. I just had to say that because it’s disrespectful and racist. You can be progressive and racist in this city. And I’ve seen it for the last 15 months and it’s disgusting that we have to sit here and see that. I had to call it out colleagues, because I’m very disappointed. I will respect people’s right to freedom of speech. I can take it. Constantly. But I will not tolerate the racism, blatantly questioning my blackness, for the record. Thank you.”
