another example where i apply this.
you can see how this can apply to city skylines. obviously these can be stylized further, but it’s not all just tall and skinny rectangles. here we have skylines of tokyo, seattle, and nyc. we have some slopes and angles and contrast of size and shape
imo compositions can be weak when only one or two of these categories of Shape, Size, an Angle are used at one

once again, if the colors next to each other hurt to look at, then you're doing it right. however make sure you do this in moderation
so now you can see in this dress, it still reads as a white-ish color because the values are all mostly the same
turning ont he b/w layer shows that these two colors of the same value are also very similar greys
green and dull pink. two complementary ish colors. if they're the same value, zoom out, and it'll feel grey
this dress looks white from a distance, but it's actually variations of salmon and lime
impressionist paintings are a solid inspiration of mine. a lot of. the subejcts here tell your brain that x is y color, but actually...

3. grey can be your friend! making colors saturated on top of more saturated colors will tip the scales a little too much. 4. another important thing is to consider the form of your shape. for example, sharper angular shapes would work for a faeted form, but that's not what i want. also consider what's retreated from the camera so it doesn't feel flat
step 0. original image could be fine but better. the culprit in this case is that we're using the same hue over and over. step 1. reflecting light w/neighboring hues on color wheel. we're switching it up here. same image as original post except there's a splotch of a different type of blue/purple. step 2. spot highlight with another neighboring color. adding variety to the purple with more desaturated color, similar value. image has same one as step 1, but the highlight is like a bright bright teal
