We use three of those points to find the equation of that quadratic, and then identify the vertex which corresponds to the minimum error at our optimal model parameter. Two students volunteered to share their beautiful work!

I like this, though it seems limited to minimizing slope error for a *fixed* point.
Of course we validated our models with data splitting!
