Seattle-based. Interested in housing. Really more of a reply guy than a poster, but the good kind of reply guy.

Northern segment and terminus of RapidRide J I first attended an open house for this project nearly four years ago, yet somehow we’re still five years from opening day. The scoping has been a bit of a roller coaster: what started in 2011 as a high-capacity rapid transit corridor had by 2016 morphed in to an “enhanced bus project” running in mixed traffic. Our 2016 analysis of Link vs. BRT travel times looked pretty bleak, and at its nadir we called it “an electrified and more frequent Route 70+67 and little more.” In 2017, however, things got a bit better. SDOT added bus priority back in south of Eastlake, including BAT lanes on Fairview and a new inbound bus-only lane on Virginia. However the northern terminus, once set as Northgate, was scaled back to Roosevelt. Finally, last year the opening date slipped to 2024 as part of the Move Seattle reset.

It plays a bit like a workplace mockumentary, where the actors deliver their lines in earnest and only the audience can see the humor in what’s unfolding.
Despite over a decade in office, McDuffie is light on substance, both in his campaign—his website is, at the moment, bereft of a platform or proposals—and his responses to our questionnaire. What he did share was at times contradictory. His pro-historic-district stance, for example, casts doubt on the depth of his support for legalizing more, denser housing citywide. More than 19% of all properties in the District are either landmarked or within a historic district, more than Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia combined; McDuffie thinks that’s not enough, despite historic designations effectively constraining where and how much housing can be built. Likewise, while we’re glad that he’d remove parking or travel lanes to install a dedicated bus lane, his unwillingness to do the same for a protected bike lane does not inspire confidence that he’d really “redesign streets to prevent crashes before they happen.” We’ve consistently endorsed McDuffie (in 2022, 2018, 2014, 2012, and 2010), but don’t believe that his administration would as proactively embrace our preferred policies as his competition.

Earl also reassures them that they will survive, stating that dinosaurs have been on Earth for 150 million years and reaffirming his faith that their species won't go extinct. An ominous silence falls as the Sinclairs look out of the window in uncertainty as the snow from the volcanic winter continues to slowly bury their home along with the wax fruit factory that started the disaster in the first place.
