Trump said a lot of important things in his recent speech. He said he’s talking to someone who is important and respected in Iran but that he wouldn’t give a name as he does not want them to get killed even though it’s the US that is currently carrying out significant operations in Iran along with Israel. He said there are no guarantees that a deal could be reached, but that they’re moving in the direction of no nuclear weapons of any kind or enrichment and peace in the Middle East. This sounds very much like the deal that was on the Omani negotiation table before the war started 23 days ago. Clearly, there’s still a lot of ground to be covered, as Trump says there are no guarantees at this stage and the Iranians said they didn’t ask for a ceasefire. But there is a degree of whiplash in all of this as 72 hours ago, Trump said he wanted a deal. Then, 48 hours ago he threatened to blow up every part of Iran’s energy infrastructure in a social media post. And when he was asked about the possible deployment of marines to the region, he said we don’t talk about strategy – despite having already flagged up the strategy on social media.

Israeli attack on bridge 'is only the beginning', says defence minister Israel’s military said it struck the Zrarieh Bridge spanning the Litani River early on Friday, in what appears to be the first time Israel has acknowledged attacking civilian infrastructure in Lebanon since the conflict began. Reuters reports that Israeli defence minister Israel Katz said on Friday that the Lebanese government “will pay increasing costs through damage to infrastructure and loss of territory” until Hezbollah is disarmed. “This is only the beginning,” Katz said.
