I don't see anything in the wording that restricts it to real numbers, I would say the question is ambiguous.

I am aware of the complex factorisation. My point is that the question would be nonsensical unless the focus of the question was restricted to the real number set. In such a situation, not being “hyper-correct”, thereby complicating the language, is reasonable, and quite common.
