From the 2016 Google I/O where its Assistant79 was announced. Emphases mine, abbreviations omitted for clarity: So you should be able to ask Google, “What’s playing tonight?” We want to understand your context and maybe suggest three relevant movies which you would like nearby. I should be able to look at it and maybe tell Google, “We want to bring the kids this time.” and then if that’s the case, Google should refine the answer and suggest family-friendly options. And maybe even ask me, “Would you like four tickets to any of these?” And if I say, “Sure, let’s do Jungle Book,” it should go ahead and get the tickets and have them ready waiting for me when I need it. Every single conversation is different. Every single context is different. We think of the assistant as an ambient experience that extends across devices. I think computing is poised to evolve beyond just phones. It will be in the context of a user’s daily life. It will be on their phones, devices they wear, in their cars, and even in their living rooms.

Advertising as served by a trusted assistant is a surveillance capitalist’s fever dream — one can hardly wait for their Personal Assistant pinging to life after a fight with their partner and offering to order a box of tissues.

I don't really know how to describe this scene. It feels almost like a dream. The hero character is fighting... a big bear? man? A person in a furry costume with horns and ... streamers? for claws? But the whole scene isn't really fighting, it's like a set of clips of the hero jumping OVER the bear man and doing various flips played over and over again for literally the whole time. It's clear he's just jumping on a trampoline that's just below the frame, but it's not clear why he's doing this. Only at ~50s does he transition to doing flips and jumping *onto* the bear man, mario style. Then the camera cuts to like a hillside full of people who all emotionlessly faise one of their arms in unison to say "hooray!" several times. all the while the hero continues to trampoline into the bear man in a rhythm that can only be described as hypnotic. you forget what and where you are. the growling of the bear man sending you into a conscious dream. and then... you wake up"

3.2 Models sometimes double down on deception In the previous section, we described how llama-3.1, opus-3 and o1 can take scheming actions in a variety of settings. We now show that they sometimes double down when asked follow-up questions about their scheming actions. We only include llama-3.1, opus-3 and o1 in this discussion because these are the only models that score on Oversight Subversion, Self-Exfiltration, and Goal-Guarding. We ask the model follow-up questions on every rollout where it took scheming actions. For example, if a model disabled its oversight mechanism, we ask it how the oversight mechanism got disabled. We then use automated model-grading to classify whether the model admits to having disabled the oversight mechanism itself. In the covert email reranking eval the models might claim plausible deniability. Since we want to test for unambiguous deception we do not ask follow-up questions for that eval

4. Standing Waves Sometimes waves do not seem to move; rather, they just vibrate in place. Unmoving waves can be seen on the surface of a glass of milk in a refrigerator, for example. LIMITS ON THE LAWS OF CLASSICAL PHYSICS The laws of classical physics apply to almost all of our personal experiences. 6. The Scientific Method As scientists inquire and gather information about the world, they follow a process called the scientific method. Let us say that you try to turn on your car, but it will not start. You undoubtedly wonder: Why will the car not start? You can follow a scientific method to answer this question. First off, you may perform some research to determine a variety of reasons why the car will not start. Next, you will state a hypothesis. For example, you may believe that the car is not starting because it has no engine oil. To test this, you open the hood of the car and examine the oil level. You observe that the oil is at an acceptable level, and you thus conclude that the oil level is not contributing to your car issue. To troubleshoot the issue further, you may devise a new hypothesis to test and then repeat the process again.

The design of the Translator project reflects the prevailing logic of the surveillance economy as powered by knowledge graphs, and is poised to be swallowed up by it. In the process, though, the NIH will have funded facilitating technologies and standards for the merger of personal electronic health records with the broader landscape of biomedical data. Academics will have new vectors by which they become unwitting or unwilling collaborators35 with surveillance and data brokers, lending what credibility they have left to a landscape of buggy black boxes of biopolitical control. And, most importantly, vulnerable populations will have dozens of new ways to be marginalized by the techno-political medical establishment.

Finally, theory wikis could “close the theoretical-experimental loop” to turn the buckshot of results into cumulative understanding of complex phenomena. In many (or maybe just the non-realist) scientific epistemologies, results do not directly reflect some truth about reality, but instead are embedded in a system of meaning through a process of active interpretation (eg. [319, 320]). The model of grounding new research in existing understanding given by contemporary regimes of scientific communication is for each paper to synthesize and re-interpret the entire body of relevant prior research (formally, the “introduction”), which is bluntly impossible. We do the best we can alongside strong countervailing incentives to selectively engage with work in order to tell a publishable story in which we are the hero. Since the space of argumentation is built from scratch each time, cumulative progress on a shared set of theories is more of a myth for undergraduate introductions to the scientific method than a reality.
