It was 37 degrees in Thunder Bay today. Around us, 130 wildfires raged. The smoke turned the skies burnt orange and black. Ash is falling like snow. The birds are confused. Insects disoriented. Driving down Arthur Street at 6:30 pm, everyone had their headlights on because it was so dark. Entire communities are disappearing. Collins FN has burned to the ground. No one came to save them. The people saved themselves and escaped by boat. Mish and Cat Lake have lost power. Then, a train derailed downtown Thunder Bay. There is one highway to Ignace. Yet this is where trucks are slated to carry nuclear waste, for decades down that one highway, and bury it in a deep geological repository? How is this safe when Ignace itself is on an evacuation watch? We were supposed to be in Ignace tomorrow, filming a documentary series on nuclear waste being transported to this new deep geological repository that could be fast-tracked as a project of national interest. That means no environmental assessments required. The firefighters have taken our hotel rooms in Ignace. Town officials have, rightly, told us they can’t speak because of what is going on. Mother Earth, shakamikwe, is loudly screaming no more. She is throwing her might at us. It is complete madness to ignore her. See less
