On this day in 1974, Portugal toppled its dictatorship not with blood, but with music, marching, and collective defiance. The Carnation Revolution remains one of the rare moments in history where liberation arrived not through destruction, but through refusal—of fear, silence, obedience. What does this mean in 2025? It means remembrance is not static. It means history is not a graveyard of dates, but a live wire through which we confront the present. Vel’ d’Hiv was the opposite of April 25. It was silence instead of song. Obedience instead of resistance. Administration instead of justice. But both are part of the same question: What is the threshold between duty and complicity? When does a system protect—and when does it persecute? April 25 reminds us that the gears of injustice can be stopped. That refusal is also a form of construction.
