Some examples of things I've used to differentiate between Rufous Females and Broad Tailed Females that I have attempted to learn from Sheri L. Williamson, Author of A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America. 1. On the smaller set of feathers on the rump, rufous peppering reaches much further down the back and show through more with small orange Vs on butt. The feathers are more straight than they are broad or even slightly curved more outward like I see with Broad-tails. 2. L1 & L2 feathers have very clear white tips, I see way less on broad-tails. 3. The edges of the feathers on the bottom edge are not a smooth rounded curve in shape or color. The internal border between white and black is also more of a wavy uneven transition vs a more distinct white arrow transition reaching further into the midpoint of the feather in Broad-tails.
