TORONTO (June 18, 2026) – The National Hockey League Players’ Association today released the following statement regarding the completion of the NHL’s investigation of Mike Babcock: “While we found the allegations of Mike Babcock’s conduct as the Columbus Blue Jackets’ head coach very concerning, the League has decided that there is no current basis on which to restrict his employment. Moving forward, we expect that Mr. Babcock will uphold the high standards required of NHL head coaches.”
“The League has completed its review of Mike Babcock’s tenure in Columbus, and of certain alleged conduct associated therewith. Our investigation has concluded that, even in a light least favorable to Mr. Babcock, there is no current basis to restrict his employment in the League.”

Type of Review: Puck Over Goal Line/Goaltender Interference Result: No Goal Buffalo Explanation: The Situation Room initiated a video review to determine whether Jack Quinn’s shot entered the Montreal net while it was in the webbing of Jakub Dobes’ glove. Video review determined that the puck completely crossed the goal line. Montreal then initiated a Coach’s Challenge for goaltender interference. Video review determined Buffalo’s Konsta Helenius interfered with Jakub Dobes, impairing his ability to play his position in the crease prior to Jack Quinn’s goal. The decision was made in accordance with Rule 69.1 which states, in part, “Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal.” The play on the ice was challenged under Rule 38 – Coach’s Challenge. Rule 38.1 states, “In all Coach’s Challenge situations, the original call on the ice will be overturned if, and only if, a conclusive and irrefutable determination can be made on the basis of video evidence that the original call on the ice was clearly not correct. If a review is not conclusive and/or there is any doubt whatsoever as to whether the call on the ice was correct, the original call on the ice will be confirmed.”
