There is something entirely unnerving and idealistic watching the city that was once my home descend into a mix of military occupation and civil war. Stuck behind the screen, watching kidnappings and waves of protestors, I feel the tears coming to my eyes. The evil coming down from the top on a community. These neighbors responding in the only ways that they can; donating and working to help those targeted by the government, recording every little moment they can, and mobilising in the streets against the agression. I take my videos every day in the streets here, guilty to be somewhere free from this pain, in the calm of the streets of Strasbourg. It feels cold outside, but the temperature is nowhere near what those protesting in Minneapolis are facing. Even people here are talking about what is happening so far away. Friends posting on their Instagram stories photos and videos of kids being kidnapped and moms being killed. At school, my teachers and classmates fail to avert their gaze when my country is mentioned. Some people try to make jokes about the situation to make me feel better, but we all know the undeniable truth that America is fucked. I worked in politics to try and avert this situation, and I did not work hard enough. I let myself get burnt out by the impossibility of politics in the country, even at the local level. I want to do more, but after building a life so far away, I’m not sure what I can do. For now I just need to share what is happening. I hope that Americans will wake up, that my old neighbors, community members, and family wake the fuck up. I hope that other people that see the same situation as impossible in their countries heed the warning. Fascism, nationalism, and the extreme right must be stopped.
