Seen from above (taken from Larpool Viaduct) a railway line runs alongside the River Esk which is millpond smooth. Trees to the right and the red roofs of a small complex of holiday homes to the left. A train is coming towards us. This well-known tourist attraction here on the North Yorks Moor Railway (NYMR) has a steam loco that pulls old style carriages. Think Agatha Christie and times gone by. Today it’s a diesel loco pulling the carriages. The sky is grey but has promise of brightening up.

Blue sky with a swirl of wispy cloud above a scene of fields golden with ripening cereal crops. There’s scrubby grass and wildflowers directly in front of us as we stand at the top of the cliff; the cliff can be seen sloping away gently to the right, it’s grassy but I wouldn’t like to try rolling down it.
Looking across a hedge with a spindly tree to the left, there’s a big field and more trees, then a small wood and even more fields beyond that. It’s a bit cloudy but some blue peeking through.
A large black slug with its orange underside just visible. It’s meandering along the bottom of the window pane in a brown framed glass patio door. The rain washed stone of the patio flags are behind.
Let’s just say we’re looking over a wire fence at the back ends of two of three big boy cows standing together on a patch of compacted earth in a paddock. They appear to have had butt lifts - these boys are RIPPED. Beyond the paddock can be seen the side of the road bridge that crosses the small river that runs alongside it.
A hedge with another hedge and trees behind. Sitting on top is a young squirrel with its head tucked down and its tail (quite ratty with its summer ‘plumage’) curled along its back. It’s having a nice little nap but the eye facing us is open.
Gloomy grey sky over dull green fields and shrubs on the cliff top and a grey sea below. It looks wet and it was.
A cliff face which appears to be mostly dirt, with a fringe of grass on the top edge. The face has eroded quite badly and looks like it might collapse imminently, with cracks and ridges visible from previous slippages. There are multiple nest holes in the face which the footage zooms in on - these are like little round rabbit burrows - around and in which brownish-black birds with short forked tails and white chests and stomachs are flying, popping in and out with great speed as they feed their (not seen) babies.
A footpath running ahead of us through a tunnel of trees and grass. A man in sunglasses, short-sleeved shirt and shorts (which are similar colours to the surrounding plants and trees in the pic but in real life aren’t as green - as if his clothing has taken on chameleon qualities) is walking ahead of us and has just turned his head and shoulders as if to look at something to his right. He might’ve heard a bird or an animal or be looking out to the view on the right. Or maybe he was turning to listen to something I said (unlikely).
Looking towards Whitby with our back to Sandsend (harbour just about visible sticking out to sea), there’s a big sky with dramatic clouds; brown sand, calm sea with just a lacy trim of froth, and a bit of cliff side to the right.
A bowl filled with Biscoff chocolate eggs. Well, at 20p each, who wouldn’t?
Whitby abbey and nearby buildings sitting on the headland, the cliff erosion below it is visible. Fence and posts Marie the edge of the cliff. Dark grey sea to the right, the sky looms with grey clouds with blue on the horizon.
Skinningrove beach, below the grassy cliff on which we stand. Silvery sea and grey and white clouds. The curves of the coastline, breakwater and beach all seem to echo each other.
Two images, top has a seagull’s head poking above a rain gutter. Bottom has a cat in a box but the cat is facing exactly the same way and has a near identical expression as the seagull.
A cheap wooden rosary with simple crucifix, the medallion says ‘I prayed for you at Knock’. A separate and chunkier crucifix to the side, which opens up to hold a piece of relic from a saint. Maybe that came from Knock, too? Who knows.

Two pale pink large blowsy peony flowers with several unopened buds. The petals are like tissue paper and centre of the flowers is a sunny yellow.
Great tit at the entrance hole of a rustic looking bird box -it’s like a chunk of log with a roof and hangs on the trunk of a spruce tree. The bird is feeding a hungry chick - movement of the chick can just been seen. The parent then goes into the bird box, no doubt to do a bit of cleaning and tidying.
Two very tarnished, worn and dented round dog tags in a ring. One is brass, one is steel (maybe). Engraved by hand with their names in the way these things used to be done. Each is a bit smaller than a two pence piece.

What looks like a full scale surface to air missile launcher parked on a raised bit of ground in a field. People in yellow hi-vis jackets nearby.
A hedgehog at a water bowl, its head is reared back and its neck is tucked in as if it’s realised there is a cat behind it (which there is). Kitty is white with grey patches (bearing in mind it’s a b&w pic from a wildlife camera). The cat is staring straight at the camera. He’s called Bruce, btw.
A wooden fence casts shadows on the footpath to its right, and draws the eye towards the field ahead which is on a cliff top. The cliff face is to the left of it, and curved like a letter B to the horizon. Calm sea below and blue sky with white fluffy clouds above.
Heavy dark grey clouds with a few lighter ones and a bit of noise sky peeping through. The sea below is grey and choppy; the cliff top on which we stand creates a dark and gloomy profile and even the grass and shrub just in front of us have lost their colour.
An old fashioned domed band stand with wrought iron filigree decoration. Beyond it you can see the fields above the headland, with a yellow field of flowering rape seed shining brightly in the sun. Sitting inside the stand is a smartly uniformed brass band. There are a few small rows of seats are arranged in front, the seated audience are enjoying the music and gently moving to the sound. A conductor is keeping everyone mostly to time and the band are playing a rousing tune (sorry, don’t know what).

Standing at the mouth of the river, you’re looking up river towards a grass covered cliff face, on each side of the river there are fishermen’s cottages with the ones on the right higher up the cliff. A small blue and white boat is right in front of us, reflected in the shallow water. Bottom left is a pretty bright pink flower common to coastal areas.
‘Charm Bracelet’ sculpture, the outer ring is made from what appears to be an iron wheel rim. Hanging from the top are bronze ‘charms’: from left to right there’s a shovel, a ring on a chain, a mermaid’s purse, a cat, a starfish, a horse, a pigeon, something indistinguishable with a whale-like tail (possibly a mermaid), something else indistinguishable but shaped a bit like a cone with a handle with something sticking out of the top - like a quiver with arrows, but not- and, finally a possibly porpoise. The sculpture is set on the cliff top (grassy and sandy soil beneath the ring) with the sea behind. The sea and sky are beautifully blue.
Crocheted/knitted postbox topper. It’s a big post box (you can see the top of the bright red post box at the bottom of the picture) so it’s quite a big topper, easily 2 feet/60cm across. The base is green and from this angle you can see six flower heads (daffodils); three white sheep with black faces; two highland cows; a blue tit with three baby blue tits in a nest; the head of a chicken and the bum of a pig and what might be a puffin or a penguin in the middle. Let’s just say that scale is not important with any of these items 😁
Crows lined up on wooden groins (groynes?). One, three crows back, is looking directly at us but they’re all facing into the wind. Sandy, pebbly beach behind, the wood is green with age.
Two items that look a bit like mollusc shells but are grey and fossilly-looking. Each is curved with ridges on the back surface, not unlike what a curved horny fingernail might look like. Looking through a slightly wet window across the heads of some pale pink tulips and daffodils, with a couple of other spring bulb heads just seen. Beyond that is a wooden decked area (wet with rain) backed by shrubs and trees. The still photo doesn’t show that the bulb heads are waving in the breeze.
