Alice begins her fall The rabbit-hole plunges downward like a tunnel. The text describes it as "so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well." She has time to look around, noticing shelves and cupboards along the walls, and even takes a jar labeled "ORANGE MARMALADE" (which is empty). Alice falls through the darkness As she descends, she begins to wonder how far she will fall, imagining she might fall through the center of the Earth and emerge on the other side—where people walk upside down. She continues to reflect aloud, then suddenly stops falling, realizing she’s now upside down, before regaining her balance and calling out to the Rabbit.
