The honest truth is that, at our current level of scientific and philosophical understanding, we do not have a fully accepted explanation for why any particular physical state should be associated with conscious experience rather than being entirely nonconscious. In other words, there is no known valid and sound argument—one that begins from well-established premises and leads through logically unassailable steps to a certain conclusion—that fully solves the “hard problem” of consciousness. Let me lay this out plainly: Argument: 1. Premise (Established by Observation): We know that certain physical states (e.g., states of the human brain) are correlated with conscious experience. For example, when a human reports feeling pain, joy, or seeing red, there are corresponding physical processes in that person’s brain. 2. Premise (The Hard Problem): Explaining why these particular brain states are accompanied by subjective experience (a “felt quality,” or qualia) and not merely by unconscious information processing is known as the “hard problem” of consciousness. It is widely acknowledged in philosophy and cognitive science that standard physical explanations (e.g., describing neural firings, chemical reactions, information flows) tell us about structures and functions, but do not yet tell us why there is something it is like to be in those states. 3. Premise (Current State of Knowledge): Despite intensive research in neuroscience, cognitive science, and philosophy of mind, no theory currently achieves a widely accepted “bridging” explanation—one that derives subjective experiential qualities from purely physical descriptions.
