Frayn recognized that the act of constructing a farce machine is itself a machine. He created a farce about performing a farce.

He constructs one machine (the rules of the play), then another machine (the rules of the actors putting on the play), and then constructed a meta-machine out of the interaction between the two. It’s so enjoyable to watch.
